It uses a function built-in to the SD specifications. It (this question) is actually frightfully common, so it would be good if Sony bodies either didn't format the cards this way, or, there was an explanation of the benefits of this 'destructive' formatting. Sony does some type of low level format in camera rather than a simple table wipe like most companies. Recovery on format on Sony cameras is unlikely. How important are the photos to you? I formatted a third, Sony SD card in the camera as a test, so that I could not manipulate the cards further. It probably still exists in the physical flash cells, but it is beyond any software recovery.
